When you study historical price action, what are you looking for and how does it help your trading?

I sometimes ask myself how I'd teach my friends, or my son, to trade. It is not easy, because everyone has their own personality and risk appetite. My answer is that I look for asymmetric risk-reward entries. I heard the idea from Jason Shapiro at the TraderLine conference and agree with it. I focus on finding entries with limited downside, represented by a tight stop, and meaningful upside, where the price should start trending in my direction after entry. The lower the risk, the better, because I'm aiming for asymmetric risk-reward.
